[HANDverk] Etain Face Paint

We did make a promise to give our Update Group a free face paint every month. So this month we have our Etain Face Paint available at our mainstore. We’ll only keep it out for February, so come on by and get yours. Did we mention our Update Group is free to join?

This paint was actually requested by a friend of mine, based on the paint seen on the character Etain in the movie Centurion. As with most film productions that have Pict characters, they are usually shown with body paint that is dyed blue with woad (thanks to Braveheart). Yet we don’t really know whether or not the Picts painted themselves with woad, the only historical reference is one small passage made by Julius Caesar.

Anyway, we we included a white version, so you can tint it to whatever color you fancy.

The Gorean Room (1-15 February)

There is fresh stuff in the Gorean Room for this round, everything is either 50 or 70L. Come on by and check it out, we have our Brude Body Paint out for 50L. It looks pretty great on men and women alike.

The [H] Look #16

I was poking around today in my inventory, trying to get it organized to some degree. Like getting the clothing into the clothing folder, then categorizing it all. I tend to  let things get out of hand and then I forget what I have. For instance, I forgot entirely about this skirt from Meena, the shirt from Whippet & Buck, and this necklace from League. I only recently ended up shopping at Meena, I just don’t remember picking up the skirt. Anyway, it was colorful, so it caught my eye and I put an outfit together around it.

Meena is a pretty interesting store, they call the style ‘Afghanistan Bohemian’. All the clothing there is fun, relatively cheap and definitely different from most of the things you come across on the grid. I blogged a pair of boots from there not long ago that I adore, so I really recommend  stopping by and seeing what they have. All the proceeds actually end up going towards a women’s association in Afghanistan. They have a little blurb in a note card that says the following:

BoHo HoBo presents Meena, a new shop named Meena, is in honour of the founding member of RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan which has been fighting for human rights, democracy and social justice in Afghanistan since 1971. All proceeds from the sales of both Meena, and BoHo HoBo go to RAWA in order to help fund schools, orphanages, clinics and income generating projects for Afghan people.

The style of clothes is ‘Afghanistan Bohemian’. It is a hybrid of traditional Afghan styles and western styles of clothes. Traditional afghan styles have a lot of variety due to the many ethnic groups represented in Afghanistan, as well as it’s historic place on the ancient silk road and the influences of the various cultures that have passed through this desert country. Tajik, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Kuchi nomad, Indian, Turkish and Persian styles are all influencing factors in the style of traditional Afghan clothes and as well in this collection of Afghanistan Bohemian wear.

So you can get some nice, colorful clothes and help out people in Afghanistan in the process. Good deal all around.

The [H] Look #15

So I finally broke down and went to the Seasons Gatcha. I’m not really a huge fan of gatchas and I don’t quite get the appeal. Yet Mia gave me the landmark and told me to check it out a few weeks ago, so I figured it was time that just go and see. It’s surprising the quantity of stuff there and I had fun buying random accessories and what have you. The earmuffs from !Ohmai and the neck fur from duboo are both from the event. I have an assortment of other things, so we’ll see how they get incorporated into future posts.

I got these shoes from Rochambeau a while ago and forgot that I had them. They look a lot like these handmade shoes viking shoes I saw online, which is what perpetuated me to buy them.  I mainly play Sigi in Gor with a Torvaldsland back story, which for the unfamiliar, is something like a viking/nordic/celticy culture. It has made me a tad obsessed with wools, knits and fun prints, which show up in this outfit. Along with anything with fur. I really need to make some more fur so I don’t have to shop so much.

If you spend any time role-playing on Gor sims (particularly northern ones), you’ll noticed that there are a lot of browns and desatureated colors. This muted color pallet is very difficult to look at over and over and over. Sure, it gives it a more medieval feel, I think a lot of players go for a period look. Yet if you do any online searches for viking/nordic or icelandic tradtional dress, you’ll see they wore a lot more color. So this is my little take on it.

The [H] Look #14

Another day, another outfit. This time with a rigged mesh sweater.

A few people have mentioned to me that Linden Labs is trying to fix the issue with (rigged) mesh not being modifiable, or perhaps they are trying to figure out a way for it to fit over body mass also. I haven’t really looked into it, but I have looked at the alpha mesh deformer that comes with the most recent release of Exodus Viewer. From what I can tell, it basically deforms rigged mesh clothing to fit over the underlying mesh, the underlying mesh being your body. You could think of it as laying a blanket over a pile of rocks, the rocks have a shape and the blanket, via gravity, ‘molds’ to that shape. In any event, the draw back to this would be that there are things that deform the underlying mesh, like shoe bases. When you apply this deformation to the rigged mesh shoe, it will mold to the weird shape of your foot instead of retaining its shoe like shape. So if this is to be a ‘fix’ to the issue with rigged mesh, it will probably be a sloppy one unless the basic idea changes. Then again, it is an alpha release, so maybe there will be some finer constraints on how it actually ends up deforming meshes.

All that aside, the sweater in this outfit is really well made, but that is what one expects when they buy from Mon Tissu. I have come across other clothing where the rigging is a bit off, but this sweater moves quite nicely with the avatar. The hair was actually a gift at one point from LeLutka and I think it’s purchasable now. I did give the mesh eyes a try that I saw over on Juicy Bomb, but my images don’t really do them justice since I forgot I had them on and didn’t take any close-up shots. They look really nice and detailed, but I wish there was an option to delete the script since the eyes are no mod. Oh, and the jewelry was a Mandala Christmas gift, so I haven’t checked if the color is still around.

This outfit is a bit hipper than what I normally do, probably because of the hat. Enjoy.

The [H] Look #13

Hot pink boots are usually not my thing, but I really liked these embroidered ones from Meena. I was chatting with Mia while I was shopping and she didn’t think pink boots were a good choice, hence I had to make an outfit just to show her they could be worn well (provided that she reads this).

This outfit, was basically built around these boots. I didn’t want to have too much bright and wild stuff going on, so the rest of the clothing is rather muted in comparison. Yet I did tint some paint to echo some of the vibrant colors seen on the shoes.

The vest is an old Milk Motion Fifty Linden Friday offering, but she had all her old FLF stuff out in a room during the last round before they stopped the event. These pants from Fishy Strawberry remind me of pants worn by South American gauchos, which is kind of fun unto itself, no?

The [H] Look #12

So, I have to admit that I’m a tad lazy when it comes to shopping. When I first started in Second Life, it was actually Toby who told me about the existence of the the Marketplace (well, back then it was XStreet). It was everything shopping in-world wasn’t, it was searchable and you didn’t have to wander a shop searching and searching for things. I still have an issue with large stores in-world, but that is a different rant altogether.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore the Marketplace. We put all of our products there and a vast majority of our sales are from there. Yet, recently I have found that I’m not very happy with what I find when searching around on there. So either there are makers who refuse to list (it is time consuming and Linden Labs does take a percentage), or the site is just flooded with crap. Either way, I have been doing a lot more in-world shopping and the skirt seen in this outfit is from one such adventure. Granted, it was Tera who took me to MOLiCHiNO in the first place.

The [H] Look #11

Sometimes you stumble across a piece of jewelry that you really like, only to find out you don’t have much to wear with it. I kind of ran into that issue with this really neat necklace by PIDIDDLE, I really loved the horns on it, but either the silhouette was being violated by the collars of my shirts, or the colors of the shirts were not allowing the piece to give any kind of impact.

Eventually, I paired this necklace with the feather ear cuff also from PIDIDDLE (made in collaboration with bellballs), which had a nice purple in it. From that point on, things started to fall into place and I was finally satisfied with what eventually came out of the adventure.

Also, the pants make the avatar’s bottom look pretty amazing, so it would have been a shame to wear a long sweater/top with it.

The [H] Look #10

I have several outfits that I have been neglecting to blog, this being one of them.  As I was going through them, I noticed that I use a lot of the same pieces repeatedly, which I think is ok. A lot of bloggers out there only like to show things that are new, or currently on sale. Yet, as one would shop for clothing in their first life, it’s good to have some staples that get used a lot. I feel as if I have a critical mass of stuff on my avatar to be able to show different ways to wear such things. Anyway, I just felt the need to kind of state that, in case someone were to look at this outfit and say, ‘hey, she uses those boots an awful lot!’

As I’ve mentioned, this post has been delayed, so any sale information is relevant. The sweater was picked up at the Four Corners event (over), it was nice to find a chunky knit to wear around in the virtual winter.  The necklace was actually something Tera brought me to come look for at Fallen Gods. I felt really silly for looking everywhere for it when it was a gift under the Christmas tree. It’s pretty awesome though, a detailed Mayan calendar.

At the Gorean Room Again
